Predator Free Matamata

Predator Free Matamata was formed to support the goals of Predator Free New Zealand to eradicate pests such as rats, stoats, possums, weasels and ferrets from New Zealand by 2050 and thereby protect our native forests, birds, lizards and bats.

The group which operates in Matamata, Waikato and the surrounding district is open to all. Please complete the registration form by following the link below so we can assist you to get going.

Kaimai Trapping

Third Sunday of every month we join Ngāti Hinerangi in checking the possum traps in the 1,000 hectares on the plateau on Te Tuhi Track.

Volunteers from Predator Free Matamata have joined the kaitiaki of this conservation land since 2022 in setting up traplines, installing bait stations, baiting Sentinel traps, and clearing catches. It's a big area.

Project Manager Mohi Korohina says the effort is paying off. “After three years on the ground, we’re really starting to see the forest heal. The birds are coming back, the undergrowth is thriving, and the ngahere feels alive again. That’s what keeps us going.” (Ngāti Hinerangi Annual Report, 2024-2025)

Join our group of dedicated volunteers from Sustainable Matamata and Wairere Mahi (part of Ngāti Hinerangi) on their expeditions to the Kaimai Ranges.

Please note that this work requires a reasonable level of physical fitness and mobility, as it requires you to walk on uneven ground as you aren't on a track in all-weather conditions.

Follow our Facebook page or add our calendar to find out when the next group trip is happening.

Providing traps, keeping track

Our members build, place, bait, and maintain traps.

There are 337 traps of various types currently registered in Matamata and we are always building more.

In 2021 -- our first year -- we trapped 31 rats, 44 possums, and 7 hedgehogs.

Supported by the Matamata community

Our community has supported us greatly, from neighbours allowing us to trap on their properties, as well as companies providing materials and supplies.

Our first set of rat traps were provided by Mitre 10. Rex Butterworth from LJ Hooker gave us corflute to be recycled into trapping tunnels. Pic's Peanut Butter provided their finest bait for our rat traps.

Thank you to our wonderful community.
